Viterbo, In the Name of Saint Rose
by Luca Catalano Gonzaga
FAITH AND MEMORY, FROM GENERATION TO GENERATION.
Saint Rose, a young Franciscan tertiary of the 13th century and patron saint of Viterbo, lives on in the devotion of a city that has preserved her memory for centuries.
Every 3 September, her name moves through the streets with the Machine of Saint Rose, carried on the shoulders of around one hundred Facchini: an extraordinary expression of strength, faith and belonging that unites an entire community.
Before the Machine begins its journey, there is expectation, blessings and prayer, ceremonial dress, hands clasped together and children watching.
This is how a tradition remains alive: passed from one generation to the next, until it becomes part of Viterbo’s identity.
Since 2013, the Transport of the Machine of Saint Rose has been recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
For Viterbo, however, this heritage is not simply something to be preserved: it is lived and passed on.
