Soriano nel Cimino: the Chestnut Festival in the heart of Tuscia.

Tradition, history and community life in a medieval town in Lazio.

Every autumn, Soriano nel Cimino, a medieval town nestled at the foot of the Cimini Mountains in the heart of Tuscia, transforms into a vast open-air stage.
The Chestnut Festival is one of the region’s most emblematic celebrations, bringing together history, popular traditions and a deep sense of belonging.
For several weeks, the town’s four historic districts — Papacqua, Rocca, San Giorgio and Trinità — bring the streets and squares to life with costumed parades, medieval reenactments, performances and traditional competitions.
Different generations come together to take part in a celebration that involves the entire community, combining friendly rivalry, enthusiasm and pride in their shared heritage.
The traditional games are among the festival’s most engaging moments.
In the main square, young people and adults compete in challenges of strength, balance, skill and coordination, cheered on by supporters from their respective districts.
These competitions offer an opportunity to pass down traditions and strengthen bonds between generations.
Alongside the historical reenactments, the chestnut, a symbol of the forests of the Cimini Mountains, takes centre stage in a festival that reveals a place where history is not simply something to admire, but an experience to live and share.
